Conservatives Tapping into Patriotic Spirit to Boost Poll Woes

Canada has experienced a tremendous outpouring of patriotic spirit at the conclusion of the winter Olympics. It was also during this time that the Conservative Party experienced it's worst showing at the polls.

So, the Conservative Party needs to tap into that patriotic spirit a little - by creating a crisis where there isn't one.

CBC, O Canada Lyrics to be reviewed:
Parliament is to be asked to review the "original gender-neutral wording of the national anthem," says the throne speech delivered by Gov. Gen. Michaƫlle Jean on Wednesday.
This will charge up the Conservative base as another attack by the politically correct elite on one of Canada's sacred insititutions. Stephen Harper will be able to unmuzzle the less refined of his caucus to defend Canada all the while, maintaining a calm, cool exterior - "let Parliament do its work".

There's a Facebook group too about keeping the lyrics to O Canada the same. I could have sworn it started before the announcement during the throne speech. I wonder if there will be rallies ...

It's transparent. It's disgusting.

I only hope Canadians see it for what it is.

"It's transparent. It's disgusting."

Yup. Well your half right. You fell for it.

It is transparent but it is hardly serious.By overeracting you have continued the Liberal theme of looking stupid by complaining about bodybags and wafers etc.

Well, that was a meaningless comment.

It is serious. It's a government priority - hence, it makes the throne speech.

More importantly, I'd like to know how this equates with "bodybags".

A little bit of politics 101.

The whole thing was put into the throne speech to set a diversion. The media (and obviously bloggers)have been wasting time debating the anthem rather than dealing with harder issues.Even Kinsella gets it.

A while back a Liberal senator raised this exact same issue. The response was the proper one; They ignored her.

Bodybags were raised as an issue of racism. The Lib line was that this proved that the Conservative gov't was racist and insensitive. You claim this move was "disgusting".

It turned out a nurse ordered too many of the bodybags. It made those playing the race card look foolish and ignorant. Playing this as disgusting is equally so.

Rather simple.

Then, you misinterpret my disgust.

I'm disgusted by the diversion.

Fair enough.

This kind of diversion occurs in politics routinely and by all parties at all levels.

Oh yeah, let's all honor our Olympic athletes, wave the flag, sing the anthem (with one verse or another), and vote for that dear man Mr. Harper. I think not!
